Under-fire St Patrick’s Athletic boss Tim Clancy admits that fans were entitled to express their frustration after another defeat saw the Saints drop into the bottom two.
Clancy had called for more steel from his side as they took on Bohemians at a sold-out Richmond Park, Pat’s eager to learn from the mistakes in back-to-back defeats.
But a goal in each half from Jonathan Afolabi and Dean Williams gave Bohs a well-deserved 2-0 win to put them one point clear at the top.
Pat’s struggled to create any real chances, bar one effort from a corner, which Bohs keeper James Talbot saved, and there was more pain for the Saints as midfielder Jamie Lennon was sent off for a second bookable offence.
There were boos and chants of ‘We Want Clancy Out’ from a section of the home support in the crowd of 5,002 and, ahead of a test away to champions Shamrock Rovers next week, Clancy conceded that the supporters’ expectations had not been met this season or on Friday night.
"Fans do whatever they want, they are here to support the club, I am here as manager to get results for the club, and at the minute, we're not getting results. They are well within their right to express their opinions,” Clancy said. "If you are losing games of football and you are a football manager, you have to expect that.”
Asked if he left let down by his players he said: “I am the manager, it's me. Same old story again, conceding really poor goals, not taking our chances. It's a bad combination to be doing. We need it to stop, that's what I make of it. If we keep conceding goals and not taking chances at the other end, it's not going to get us positive results, is it?”
Next Friday's game in Tallaght is key for both Pat’s and Rovers after their poor starts to the season. “It's a massive game for us, one we have to prepare for. When you are not winning football games, you have low confidence. I am the manager, I have to try and get them as confident as possible for next week,” Clancy said.
