Coimbatore: A mini-indoor
sports centre was opened at the juvenile observation home near Lakshmi Mills Junction at Pappanaickenpalayam in the city on Thursday.
The centre will also be used for activities like music, origami and storytelling. A new kitchen was also opened at the centre, which was spruced up with new furniture and utensils. District collector Kranti Kumar Pati inaugurated the facility, which was set up with the help of sponsors.
The home for juveniles in conflict with the law was established by the British in 1938. The home comes under the care of the District Child Protection Unit under the Department of Social Defense. Of late, the home lacked essential facilities and there was no proper maintenance.
With new facilities being set up and activities introduced, officials hope the home will provide a caring ecosystem to help juveniles reform and reintegrate with society. The renovation was carried out by the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) with funds from Bosch Global Software Technologies. Saghai Denis, head of engineering, Bosch, RAAC president R R Balasundaram and honorary treasurer RAAC S Devaraj were also present during its opening.
