A Day-Long Seminar On ‘Women In Sports’ organised By SSCW with NCW

Gangtok, March 10 (IPR): A day long seminar on ‘Women in Sports’ was organised by Sikkim State Commission for Women (SSCW) in collaboration with National Commission for Women at Chintan Bhawan today.
The prominent spokesperson for the seminar were National Boxing Coach, Boxing Federation of India, Smt. Sandhya Gurung, Mountaineer, Ms. Manita Pradhan, National Football Referee AIFF & AFC, Smt. Phurki Lhamu Bhutia.
The seminar also had the presence of the Chairperson, Sikkim State Khadi Board, Smt Chung Chung Bhutia, Chairperson Sikkim State Commission for Women Smt. Chungkipu Lepcha, Special Director General of Police Law and Order, Shri Akshay Sachdeva, Additional Director, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Dr. Ram Bahadur Biswakarma, Member Secretary, Sikkim State Commission for Women, Smt. Yousa Lachenpa, Teaching Faculty from different institutions, students from Deorali Sr. Sec. School, Enchey Sr. Sec. School, Modern Sr. Sec School and Paljor Namgyal Girls School and other officials.

The National Commission for Women, Government of India is a statutory body since 31st January 1992 under the National Commission for Women Act, 1990.
The Chief Guest, Chairperson, Sikkim State Khadi Board, Smt Chung Chung Bhutia in her special address appealed the children to apply the message conveyed by the resource person as a source of inspiration. She mentioned the need to follow a healthy diet and maintain a routine to help keep discipline. The commission is fully committed to assist children in sports, she added.
Chairperson Sikkim State Commission for Women Smt. Chungkipu Lepcha hoped that the students would benefit from the knowledge gained in the seminar. The prospects for sports in Sikkim appears to be promising, she added.
Presentation on activities of the commission was presented by Sikkim State Commission for Women, Smt. Yousa Lachenpa in which she gave an insight on the establishment of the SSCW in the year 2001 Sikkim in accordance with Sikkim State Commission for Women Act 2001. The Commission since its inception has been working for the welfare and protection of women from domestic violence, social atrocities and other social evils, she added.
The commission caters to provide legal programmes, sensitisation programmes, workshops, talk shows webinar and numerous ways to assist women in identifying where to seek help, the commission additionally provides the provision for counselling. The members of the commission also inspect shelter homes and women empowerment centres. Furthermore, she mentioned about the provision of vocational training across diverse fields to facilitate women’s independence, about the Free Legal Aid Clinic set up in the premises of the commission and also regarding the Mahila Thana in various districts of the state.
Special Director General of Police Law and Order, Shri Akshay Sachdeva in his interactive address mentioned the relevance of sports in pursuing career in the police department in which he specified the adoption of a healthy lifestyle to stay fit. He further encouraged the youth of Sikkim to come forward in the field of sports.
Additional Director, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Dr. Ram Bahadur Biswakarma shed light on the different government programmes offered by the department. He mentioned about the government’s assistance towards the ‘Khelo India’ initiative in which 10 sport discipline is organised by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department.
Moreover, he mentioned the state government’s drive to promote women in sports, which includes the establishment of Women’s Football Academy in Soreng, construction of Tarundeep Rai Archery Academy and Bhaichung Stadium, the Chief Minister’s One Mile Run to name a few and other assistance from the state government.
The keynote speakers at the seminar shared their valuable perspectives regarding their personal experiences.
Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by member SSCW, Smt. Parvati Acharya.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Member, SSCW, Smt. Chandra Maya Tamang.
