Varanasi: In a laudable initiative, an alumnus of
Banaras Hindu University, M Sreeram Raju donated Rs 5.25 lakh to establish an annual scholarship in the name of his
guru Prof S N Upadhyay, former professor of chemical engineering and former director of the Institute of Technology,
BHU.
According to the BHU spokesperson, he donated Rs 5.25 lakh to the university to create an endowment for starting an annual scholarship of Rs 25,000 to be named as ‘Prof S N Upadhyay Scholarship’ to meritorious and needy (economically weaker) students of M Tech (Food Technology) programme of the Department of Food and Dairying Science of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU. Prof Upadhyay was a teacher of Dr Raju when he was a research student at BHU. Raju donated Rs 5lakh for the establishment of an endowment to earn interest for the scholarship and also donated Rs 25,000, separately to initiate the scholarship from the current academic session.
Raju obtained his PhD degree in Biochemical Engineering in 1996 and established his own company ‘Shree Shakthivel Crop Limited’ at Hyderabad, Telangana in 2011 to help farmers and promote use of biotechnology in agriculture and reduce/eliminate use of chemicals. This company is an ISO 9001:2015 certified company. The headquarters of this company are located in Hyderabad. Its products and technology are used all over India as well as in several Asian and African countries. Currently it is planning to expand its business opportunities in the USA and South America.
