Non-performing corporations likely to be shut down
Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Friday hinted at shutting down government-run non-performing corporations. He also directed all the departments to make financial provisions in their budgets to avail themselves of the maximum number of schemes sponsored by the Centre.
“We will review all the corporations, and if required, we want to close some down. I want to say that these (loss-making corporations) are a burden on the government. In this financial situation, there is no point in running some corporations unnecessarily. Only profit-making and self-sustainable corporations should continue,” said Sawant.
Stating that there is scope for all corporations to become self-sufficient and profitable, he said, “Most corporations do not explore opportunities. If the chairman and staff of a corporation are good, then it can run better.”
The chief minister said that all departments, in the interest of the state and its people, must take advantage of the maximum number of central schemes. “If there is a need for 40% provision (in their budgets) to avail themselves of central schemes, they (department) should make it. Departments should not say that as no provision was made, they cannot avail of central schemes.”
Sawant, who will present the state budget on the first day of the upcoming assembly session, said that he has commenced the process of consultation. “I have started reviewing all departments on the budget,” he said.
Speaking about the G-20 summit, Sawant said that all the meetings will be held at the Taj Convention Centre at Dona Paula. Other venues are being explored, he added.
EDC chairman Sadanand Shet Tanavade handed over Rs 86 lakh dividend to the state government. Sawant said that the EDC also gives loans to the government and implements government schemes.
