Mumbai: Day temperatures in Mumbai, which had dipped slightly thanks to the unseasonal rain, rose again on Thursday. The maximum temperature recorded by the IMD Santacruz observatory was 37.9 degrees Celsius - six degrees above normal. Beginning earlier this week, day temperatures have been yo-yoing. On March 6, Monday, the maximum temperature touched 39.3 degrees, making Mumbai the hottest spot in India for the day, but the very next day it came slipping down by four degrees. Due to the rain Mumbai witnessed on Tuesday, maximum temperatures had dropped to 35.8 degrees.
Meanwhile, the night temperatures recorded have also also been above normal as the IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatory recorded minimum temperatures of 24.4 and 21.6 degrees, which were three and one degree above normal, respectively.
Independent meteorologist Rajesh Kapadia of Vagaries of the Weather, a private weather forecasting blog, stated that things are not likely to see a major improvement for Mumbai over the coming weekend. "Between March 9-12, we expect Mumbai to heat up, but no rain. A dazzling hot sun with dusty atmosphere could see AQI levels rise up to 300. Also, the blowing easterlies will keep the air dusty aided by the local conditions. The nights are also expected to be warm and stuffy as we do not expect night temperatures to fall below 24 degrees Celcius," he stated. Mumbai's overall AQI had touched 215 on Thursday, which falls in the poor category.
