Samsung has become increasingly invested in gaming-oriented devices, like Galaxy phones with overclocked chipsets, gaming monitors, and services like the Gaming Hub. The latter allows customers to play demanding video games on their TVs and smart monitors via the cloud without needing additional gaming hardware like expensive PCs or game consoles, and it brings accessible gaming to millions of TV buyers in numerous markets.

But there’s a good reason for Samsung’s interest in gaming: more and more people like video games. Through its Gaming Insight Study, in partnership with ONE Esports, Samsung found that 7 in 10 online users in the Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO) region are gamers.

This recent Samsung study was conducted in Q4 2022 with the help of 6,800 consumers aged 18 to 49 in markets including Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

What has Samsung discovered about our gaming habits?

Samsung’s study makes a few distinctions between gamers. There are Hardcore Gamers, Gaming Enthusiasts, Casual Gamers, and Spectators. But whether hardcore or casually, 75% of people play games for an average of 7 hours a week to de-stress and relax, according to Samsung’s study. Furthermore, 95% of gamers prefer playing games at home, and 56% of gamers play at least a few times a week.

100% of gamers also seem to be watching gaming videos. 80% of gaming enthusiasts and 82% of hardcore gamers discuss games with others.

How much money do gamers spend on their hobby?

Samsung found that 51% of gamers, hardcore and casual alike, spend an average of $30 a month on gaming-related purchases. These can vary and include esports tournament tickets, exclusive online content, streamer subscriptions, in-game skins and items, and merchandise collectibles.

Overall, 59% of gaming enthusiasts and 76% of what Samsung defines as “hardcore gamers” spend money on gaming-related virtual and physical goods.

“Gaming today is much more than a hobby — it is a pastime that brings people together,” said Samsung, adding that “with this understanding, we can continue empowering our Samsung users to enjoy their gaming passion to the fullest. Whether on our powerful galaxy devices, QLED TVs, or gaming monitors, Samsung provides the best gaming experience, for casual and hardcore gamers alike.”
