ULHASNAGAR: The Anti-Corruption Bureau, on Thursday, arrested assistant municipal commissioner Ajit Govari along with two others for accepting bribes of Rs 20,000 to allow illegal construction in Ulhasnagar in Maharashtra's Thane district.
The ACB also arrested mukadam Prakash Sankat and private car driver Pradeep Umap of Govari for taking bribes on behalf of Govari.
The ACB officials said the complainant was redeveloping his dangerous structure in ward number 1 of Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation where Govari was posted as ward officer.
Upon learning about complainant's illegal construction Govari, through Sankat, demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 from complainant failing which he would demolish the structure.
After Govari's demand, the complainant approached the Thane ACB who laid a trap and nabbed Sankat and Umap while accepting a settlement amount of Rs 20,000 out of 50,000 on behalf of Govari.
The ACB, after arresting the duo red-handed, also arrested Govari on the basis of evidence.
The sources said that Govari, who was appointed in UMC as senior clerk, was promoted to assistant municipal commissioner.
Earlier in 2016, he was booked under Section 304 (negligence causing death) of the IPC in a acase on Kalyan-Ambernath Road.
After Govari's arrest, UMC commissioner Aziz Shaikh gave the charge of ward number 1 to UMC's secretary Prajakta Kulkarni.
