Three fires erupt across port town in 18 hours
Vasco: Three fires were reported over 18 hours at different locations in Vasco. A massive fire broke out at the hillock near MES College at around 6pm on Thursday. People residing on St Jacinto Island noticed the blaze that fed on dry grass and spread across the hillock.
Authorities and the fire brigade were alerted and firefighting continued till late on Thursday night. The hillock near MES College is the site of mega building projects.
Another blaze was reported at Chicalim at around 10pm on Wednesday. The former sarpanch of Chicalim, Sebastiao Pereira; parish priest of Chicalim church Fr Bolmax Pereira; and a Chicalim panch member, Roman Vaz began to control the fire. A firetender later doused the flames before they could affect the nearby residential area. No casualties were reported.
“We are not sure what caused the fire. Some miscreants may have set dry grass and leaves ablaze,” Seby Pereira said.
The third fire was reported behind the gurdwara on Mangor hill at around 2pm on Thursday. Garbage lying at the hillock was engulfed by flames. The Vasco fire brigade brought the fire under control.
Also on Thursday, firefighting units of Goa, assisted by the Indian Navy, brought the raging blaze at Consua under control.
