CHIKKAMAGALURU: The district has reported a total of 43 cases under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act in a span of just six months and 22 are pending before the court.
The cases were reported between October 2022 and February 2023, according to the data with the women and child development department. The cases were related to harassment, misunderstanding, illicit relationship and dowry harassment. However, the authorities concerned also emphasise on reunion of the families.
Apart from violence against women, the district also reported violation of child rights. The district also recorded 23 child marriage cases and 14 are reported from Tarikere taluk alone.
The cases of child marriages are rampant in rural areas of Tarikere and Kadur. Majority of the cases are reported in economically weaker sections. Although the parents are aware about the legal consequences they manage to get their children married due to certain reasons, said an officer.
In many cases, the illegal marriages go unnoticed and the authorities fail to register cases due to lack of proof. However, the children were educated about child marriage and child rights during children gram sabha. In addition, handbills have been distributed about the punishment for the violation of child rights.
The authorities concerned had organised many rounds of awareness programmes. The children were educated at the gram sabhas at all the 226 gram panchayats across the districts. The authorities also informed about the Childline-1098.
Deputy commissioner K N Ramesh said that the authorities concerned will take necessary measures to fight social evils like child marriage.
The government has enacted a law against child marriage and concerned department will take measures to prevent child marriage and also create awareness in this regard. Suitable measures will be taken to finalize the family dispute cases at the earliest, he said.
