KOLKATA: A youth living in Bikramgarh, Liton Das (27), stabbed his live-in partner and then, hanged himself, thinking he had killed her in a fit of rage. Ironically, when police arrived, they found the woman, Priti Sardar (31), alive, albeit severely injured.
The incident took place on the morning of Dol on Tuesday. Neighbours said they called the Golf Green police station on hearing the violent argument that the couple was having. "It was around 7am that we got a call," said joint CP (Crime) Murlidhar Sharma. On reaching the spot, police found Liton hanging from a ceiling fan inside a room and Priti bleeding profusely in the next room. "Our officers found Priti Sardar, a resident of Champahati in South 24 Parganas, lying on the floor with multiple bleeding injuries," said DC (South Suburban Division) Surya Pratap Yadav.
The two were taken to M R Bangur Hospital, where Liton was declared dead. Priti was referred to SSKM Hospital.
Inquiry revealed that Priti had earlier got married to one Soumen Sardar 15 years ago and had a 14-year-old son. But they had separated 11 years ago and for the past three years, Priti had been living with Liton, an app-cab driver. "The two had moved into the rented Bikramgarh flat two years ago. Locals heard them quarrel since Monday night. On Tuesday morning, Liton, in a drunken state, stabbed Priti. When she fell unconscious, he thought he had murdered her. Perhaps, filled with guilt, he hanged himself. Priti's statement has been recorded," said Yadav.
