Columbus police to give update on investigation after body found in southern Ohio landfill

Columbus police are expected to give an update Thursday afternoon on a homicide investigation that led detectives to a landfill in southern Ohio.

The body was found Wednesday morning in a Rumpke landfill, located off of U.S. 68 in Brown County, southeast of Cincinnati. Homicide detectives were involved in the search.

As of Thursday morning, Columbus police have not formally identified the person whose remains were found or confirmed what investigation the search was connected with.

On Wednesday, as news of the search became public, Columbus police would not discuss whether the search was related to the disappearance and suspicious death investigation related to 40-year-old Renee Benedetti, who was last seen at a North Side apartment in late January.

Benedetti's boyfriend, 46-year-old Gene Scott, reportedly admitted to killing Benedetti and throwing her body in a dumpster. Scott, who is a convicted felon, was found to be in possession of multiple firearms when police searched his Arbor Village Drive apartment on Feb. 1, according to court records. Scott also had a firearm on him when he was arrested on Feb. 2 in Kentucky.

The Dispatch will update this story as more information becomes available.
