BENGALURU: The Karnataka Congress unit withdrew its call to people to observe a two-hour bandh on Thursday to protest alleged corruption by the BJP government, because of II PU and other school and college exams.
Congress had earlier said the bandh will not disrupt medical services or school and college exams, but decided to withdraw it anyway after much pressure. "We decided to call off our symbolic Karnataka bandh since students and parents were concerned that it will inconvenience them as there are exams," DK Shivakumar, state party president, said in a statement.
He said this decision was taken after consultations with senior Congress functionaries. Shivakumar, however, said Congress' fight against the Basavaraj Bommai government over corruption will continue.
The bandh - from 9am to 11am on Thursday - was called in the wake of Lokayukta sleuths finding Rs 6.1 crore in cash during a raid at the residence of Prashanth Kumar MV, son of BJP lawmaker Madal Virupakshappa. Congress had planned to pin the BJP government down and demand the resignation of the chief minister.
Shivakumar also attacked the CM's claims that his government had strengthened the Lokayukta. "Why didn't BJP merge Lokayukta and ACB when they came to the helm? It was only after a HC order to scrap the ACB that they merged it with Lokayukta," he said.
