GUWAHATI: The Assam Police, after acting on central inputs, busted an ISI espionage ring in the state and arrested five persons in Nagaon and Morigaon districts for allegedly supplying SIM cards to Pakistani agents.
Assam Police spokesperson Prasanta Bhuyan told the media, “There were inputs that around 10 people from these two districts were involved in fraudulently procuring SIM cards from different service providers and supplying those to some Pakistani agents, thus working against the integrity and sovereignty of the nation.”
A manhunt has been launched to nab the other five who are absconding.
A mobile phone found in possession of one of the arrested having two IMEI numbers was allegedly used to make WhatsApp call and share defence information with a foreign embassy. Police said they have recovered 18 mobile phones, 136 SIM cards, one fingerprint scanner, one high-tech CPU and some documents such as birth certificates, passbooks and photographs from the house of the arrested people.
The arrested have been identified as Ashiqul Islam, Bodor Uddin, Mijanur Rahman and Wahiduz Zaman, all from Nagaon, and Baharul Islam from Morigaon.
