Police: Driver crashes into sheriff's office SUV in front of Circuit Court in Hagerstown

A 38-year-old Hedgesville, W.Va., man is facing criminal charges after the pickup truck he was driving Wednesday morning near Washington County Circuit Court struck a parked sheriff's office cruiser, police said.

The cruiser, which was heavily damaged, was pushed into two other parked vehicles, according to a news release from the department. All the parked vehicles were unoccupied.

The crash occurred about 10 a.m. in the area of 24 Summit Ave., according to the release.

A search at the scene found the driver of the Chevrolet truck, Christian Edward Cooker, had about 270 pills that are suspected to be a controlled dangerous substance, said Sgt. Carly Hose, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

Hose said Wednesday night the pills had yet to be tested to identify the substance.

Cooker is charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with the intent to distribute and two misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance that is not cannabis, according to online court records.

He also was issued traffic citations for negligent driving; reckless driving; driving while impaired by a controlled dangerous substance; and driving while so far impaired by drug(s) he could not drive safely, according to online court records.

Cooker was being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center on Thursday morning. He had a bond review hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday in Washington County District Court.
