UPDATE: Multiple agencies searching land and sea for missing Fairhaven woman

FAIRHAVEN — Multiple police, fire and other public safety agencies were scouring land and sea Tuesday searching for 43-year-old, mother-of-two Anapaula Huggins, who has been missing since Monday morning.

Fairhaven Police Lt. Kevin Kobza said they were searching the entire 31-mile Fairhaven coastline by air, land and sea, and the search would grow wider as it continues.

The search began in the Pope Beach area on Manhattan Avenue where she was last seen.

Kobza said Huggins left her Raymond Street residence Monday just after 7 a.m. She was last seen on video at 7:30 a.m. taken from a private residence walking down the beach. She was reported missing around 11:30 a.m.

He said during a press conference Tuesday afternoon from the beach that she was wearing a maroon jacket and black pants. She is approximately 5-feet-8 inches tall.

She was not wearing shoes, he said, but added that was not uncommon for her. "From what we've been told when she leaves the house to walk her dog she normally does so barefoot," he said.

The dog was found by Fairhaven Animal Control at approximately 9:30 a.m., with no sign of Huggins, and has been returned to the family.

Kobza said police we're going house to house asking people with surveillance video cameras to check if they had picked up any footage of Huggins.

Kobza added they weren't just asking people along the shoreline. "We're asking anyone along Sconticut Neck Road, and main thoroughfares. We don't want to rule anything out in the event she did go someplace beside the beach."

Police are also asking residents to check their cars, sheds, on-site campers and unlocked basements.

Kobza said they were not ruling anything out at this point but they hoped she would be found safe. He said her family has been cooperating with the investigation.

He said, "We've got air, sea and land assets active right now. We've got the Mass. State Police and I believe the Coast Guard air branch working. We've got vessels from the Coast Guard, Harbormaster."

The Coast Guard is using sonar to check the ocean floor, and dive teams have been deployed on the search vessels in the event something underwater is located that warrants investigation, he said.

He said he couldn't provide a time frame on the search, including when or if it would stop for the night. They would continue the best they could, he said, though weather would be a factor.

In addition to multiple police and fire departments from different parts of the state helping out, Kobza said state police, environmental police, Dept. of Recreation and Parks, as well as the Coast Guard, were involved in the search.

"We've pretty much called in the cavalry," he said.
