KALYAN: Women commuters at Dombivli railway station protested against the railway administration over their long-standing unfulfilled demands by wearing black ribbons, on Wednesday, International Women's Day.
They demanded that in order to ensure a smooth and safe journey, the railway administration should increase special trains, bogies for women, and should take action against hawkers who illegally enter the women compartment.
The protest was organised by the Federation of Suburban Railway Passenger Association. They even travelled in local trains to go to their offices.
Lata Argade, secretary of association who led the protest said, “There is a rise in rush in the women's compartment. Some women were injured and even died after falling from moving train. There are also cases when we found male hawkers entering into the women compartment”.
Argade said, “Last year in October month, we had met with divisional railway manager of Central Railway and demanded addressing issues related to rush by increasing bogies but it’s been six month, nothing has been done by railway administration”.
She also claimed that before holding protest recently we had written to railway asking to take decision on our demands but there was no response.
However, when asked about the issue Shivaji Sutar, chief public relation officer of Central Railway said, “We will look into their demands”.
