Teen accused of shooting man near Roseville schools to face felony charges, police say

A 13-year-old boy was charged with multiple felonies, including assault with intent to murder, Tuesday in connection with a shooting that left a 40-year-old man injured near Steenland Elementary School in Roseville, the Macomb County Prosecutor's office said.
The juvenile was charged with assault with intent to murder, a felony that carries a maximum life sentence, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. The juvenile could face up to five years in prison on a concealed weapons felony and four years maximum for assault with a dangerous weapon felony, among other weapons-related charges.
Police had previously said the teen was 14 years old, but Deputy Chief Mitch Berlin confirmed with The Detroit News Tuesday he is 13 years old.
The shooting suspect was a previously expelled student, a Roseville Police Department spokesman said in an email.
"They did not know each other and the shooter was not currently a student at the school. He was previously expelled," the spokesman said.

It was unclear if the student was previously a Roseville schools student or from another district.
The shooting happened around 3:10 p.m. Monday afternoon when police responded to a report of gunshots at Chestnut and Barkman streets in Roseville near Roseville Middle School. Steenland Elementary School is next to the middle school.
Officers found a 40-year-old male victim with multiple gunshot wounds who was later taken to an area hospital, according to Roseville police. His condition was unknown Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the suspect fled on foot Monday, but was later taken into custody and the handgun used was recovered.
A preliminary hearing was held in front of Macomb County Circuit Court Chief Referee Linda Harrison and the 13-year-old was placed in the Juvenile Justice Center, according to the prosecutor's office. His next court date is scheduled for March 29.
“This juvenile had no business being in possession of a firearm,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said in a statement.
Video of the shooting shared on social media shows someone running up to the man and firing at least two shots and then running away. People are nearby at the same time. The incident led to students and staff at both schools sheltering in place Monday.
"Steenland Elementary was put into shelter in place and their release was delayed. Roseville Middle School students were already released, however, we put the school into shelter in place for any remaining staff or students due to the proximity of the building to the incident," said Mark Blaszkowski, superintendent of Roseville Community Schools, in a statement to parents and staff.
