GHAZIABAD: A 27-year-old gym trainer on Monday died during treatment at a Delhi hospital, two days after he was thrashed by a group of students of a private college in Sahibabad.
Six BA students of the college have been arrested from the city.
Police said Virat Mishra, a resident of Sahibabad's Lajpat Nagar who worked at a gym in Raj Nagar, saw two students - a man and a woman - riding on a scooter near his house, not too far from LR College, on Saturday afternoon. Mishra objected and told the two they were inappropriately being intimate in a residential area. A heated argument broke out between one of the students, Maneesh Kumar (20), and Mishra.
As the spat went on, a group of students joined Kumar and started hitting Mishra with bricks, sticks and rods.
"They beat up Mishra with wooden and iron rods. They also picked up some bricks lying on the road and hit him with them," said Bhaskar Verma, Sahibabad ACP.
Mishra's friend Bunty, who lived nearby, intervened but he too was thrashed, the ACP said, adding that the accused fled after other neighbours came in.
"Locals took Mishra and Bunty to a nearby private hospital for medical attention and a police team reached the spot," Verma said.
The two of them were referred to GTB Hospital in Delhi for further treatment as they suffered from head injuries. Bunty was discharged on Sunday, but Mishra died at the hospital on Monday. A post-mortem report is awaited.
Based on Bunty's complaint, an FIR was registered at the Sahibabad police station and six BA students of LR College - Maneesh Kumar, Gaurav Kasana (22), Vipul Kumar (22), Maneesh Yadav (22), Akash Kumar (22) and Pankaj Singh (20) - were arrested on Saturday.
Initially booked under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 307 (attempt to murder), cops said the FIR will now be converted to turn Section 307 into Section 302 (murder).
Mishra's father on Monday said the students beat up his son with a bike silencer too. "They left the place when Virat was lying in a pool of blood. When we got the information, some neighbours and I ran towards the students but they fled on their bikes. Virat was the main earning member in our family as I've not been doing well for the past two years due to Covid-19," said Sudama Mishra, 60.
The father said he wants strict action against the accused. "They killed my son when he objected to the wrong things those students were doing," he said.
LR College principal Dr Uday Pratap Singh said the incident that took place near the institute was "unfortunate" but he doesn't know if any of the college students were involved. "Police didn't approach us after the incident but they recorded the statement of the security guard deployed at the college gate. This is subject of a police investigation and we will help them in all possible ways," he said.
