Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins spotted in sea off Chennai coast
Each Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin has unique coloration on the body and dorsal fin
CHENNAI: The TREE Foundation, an environmental protection NGO, spotted a pod of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins off the Injambakkam coast in Chennai on Tuesday.
TREE Foundation colunteer T A Pugalarasan of Periya Neelankarai Kuppam observed Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins swimming towards south -Injambakkam.
Dr Supraja Dharini, founder and chairperson of TREE Foundation, said 30-40 dolphins were spotted 500 metre off the coast near VGP Golden Beach.
“They were milling, feeding and socialising. As we neared the dolphins, we turned off the boat engine, lifted up the propeller and observed the dolphins at a safe distance of 25-40 feet away from them,” she said.
“We were able to observe their different colouration on their body. Each dolphin has unique coloration on the body and dorsal fin. The shades of pink and grey are different for each dolphin,” she said.
