NOIDA: A man was arrested on Saturday night for allegedly setting his wife on fire at their home in Wajidpur village when she objected to his drinking habits, said police on Monday.
According to the police, the woman, currently receiving treatment at a Delhi hospital, is now stable.
On March 2 night, police received information that a man, Yadvendra Yadav, a native of Kannauj, had set his wife on fire at their home.
Police said after the crime, Yadav, a gardener at a farmhouse in Wajidpur, Noida, fled from their home on the farmhouse premises before police could reach there.
"A team from the Expressway police station rushed to the spot and found the woman with critical burn injuries. We immediately rushed her to the district hospital in Sector 30, Noida. Doctors then referred her to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi," said Shakti Avasthy, ADCP, Noida.
Police said the woman received treatment for two days before she regained consciousness on Saturday.
"We recorded her statement after that. She said her husband habitually drinks alcohol. On the night of the incident, he came home drunk, and the couple had a heated argument," Avasthy added.
The accused allegedly set his wife on fire when the woman objected to his daily drinking habit.
"He set her on fire using diesel and then fled the spot," the ADCP said.
The victim's brother lodged a police complaint in the case.
On the basis of his complaint, police registered an FIR against the accused under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 504 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code .
"We arrested the accused on Saturday night. He was produced before the court and sent to jail. Further investigation into the case is underway," the police officer said.
