Akal Takht panel report for eyes of jathedar only in Punjab
PATIALA: The 16-member committee that the Akal Takht constituted to decide if Guru Granth Sahib's saroop can be carried to protest sites met on Monday at Takht Kesgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib of Ropar district but its report will remain secret until the jathedar receives it on March 12.
Since carrying a saroop to a protest site and using it as a shield against the Ajnala police to free one of his assault-accused aides from the lockup, radical preacher and Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh has come under severe political criticism. On the day of the Ajnala clash, Akal Takht jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh had said: "Someone who fights oppression or violation of human or Sikh rights should be supported directly or indirectly, and given Guru Granth Sahib's blessings. About the question of holy book's respect, we must consider it and take inspiration from history."
The subcommittee includes presidents of the SGPC, DSGMC, and Chief Khalsa Diwan. It also includes Baba Nihal Singh of the Tarna Dal (Haria Wela), Damdami Taksal's Harnam Singh, Budha Dal's Baba Balvir Singh Akali 96-Crori, Tarna Dal (Baba Bidhi Chand Sur Singh wale) chief Baba Avtar Singh, Tarna Dal (Baba Bakala Sahib) chief Baba Gajjan Singh, and Dashmesh Tarna Dal chief Baba Major Singh. The other members are chairman of Ludhiana's Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, principal of Ropar's Sikh Missionary College, SGPC's Rajinder Singh Mehta, professor Paramveer Singh from Patiala's Punjabi University, principal Inderjit Singh Gogoani of Amritsar's Khalsa Collegiate School, Amarjit Singh of Guru Nanak Dev University's Guru Ganth Sahib research department, committee coordinator Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad, and journalist Talwinder Singh Buttar.
Peer Mohammad said: "The meeting went on for three-hour. The members cited historical facts to justify their views. This committee's decision will be final. SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami has passed me the report to take to the Akal Takht jathedar on March 12. Only the DSGMC chief could not participate. The members had a consensus against not disclosing anything until the report is opened at the Akal Takht."
One of the members said: "The Akal Takht is supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs, so the politicians, media, and others should avoid judging it on sensitive issues."
