Connecticut math teacher accused of putting students in chokeholds resigns
A Connecticut math teacher has resigned after allegedly putting elementary school students in chokeholds.
Stefanie Sanabria, 50, of Danbury, is accused of demonstrating a martial arts “chokehold” on three fifth-graders, including one who passed out.
The incident occurred at Brookside Elementary School on Feb. 24 and immediately led to an investigation by the Norwalk police department, authorities said.
“They were demonstrating jujitsu moves to some of the students in the class who had volunteered to do that,” Norwalk Police Lt. Joseph Dinho was quoted as saying by ABC 7. “So this was not a call that we usually get every day.”
The school said the student who lost consciousness was not seriously injured and received treatment by the school nurse.
“The safety of our students is our first concern, and we immediately investigated the situation involving Ms. Sanabria when it occurred,” the school stated.
Officials said it was still unclear how a math lesson turned into a martial arts demo.
Sanabria was charged with second-degree strangulation, first-degree reckless endangerment and risk of injury to a minor, Norwalk police said over the weekend. She is set to appear in court on Friday.
