COIMBATORE: It is the policy of the Tamil Nadu government to give the best care to elephants, additional chief secretary of environment, climate change and forest department Supriya Sahu said here on Monday.
“The policy for rewilding is well-established and the forest department is doing its best to rehabilitate wild animals,” the official said while visiting the office of the forest genetic division.
Nine captive animals at the elephant camp at MR Palayam in Trichy district need to be relocated to a place where they can spend their life as free animals, Sahu said. “We are planning to shift them to the Chadivayal elephant camp in Coimbatore forest division. We will create all facilities for the animals.”
Wild elephants were spotted near the camp, chief wildlife warden Srinivas R Reddy said. “We have chosen the place to rehabilitate captive elephants with a lot of care. We ensured that the place had adequate water. We will set up solar fences and elephant-proof trenches around the camp,” he added.
