BENGALURU: The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is offering free bus rides all across the city to women passengers on the occasion of International Women's Day.
The free travel facility is being provided to women in all BMTC bus services in the city with no exclusions or exceptions. Even AC Vajra and Vayuvajra services are also included in the initiative.
While 29 lakh people use the city's public bus services, it is said that around 25 per cent to 30 per cent of the passengers are women. On March 8, more than 20 lakh women are expected to travel in city buses, according to the BMTC.
The BMTC had earlier applied to the transport department seeking permission for this initiative and confirmed on Tuesday that women would be able to enjoy free bus travel on March 8, International Women's Day.
The BMTC claimed that its initiative will help women travel safely within the city, bring down congestion on the roads, control air pollution and so on.
