Silchar: A life-size statue of legendary ruler of
Manipur kingdom Maharaja Gambhir Singh was unveiled at Kamranga in Cachar district’s Lakhipur assembly constituency on Sunday on the occasion of his 235th birth anniversary.
The statue was unveiled at an event by Lakhipur BJP MLA Kaushik Rai in the presence of several dignitaries. The programme was organised by the Awapalli Khubham Ningsing Lup.
Rai said Maharaja Gambhir Singh was a brave, spiritual leader and an able administrator, who played a vital role in driving out the Burmese army from Manipur at the close of the Anglo-Burmese War in 1826. The statue has been erected to help the young generation understand his sacrifices and instil a sense of patriotism and valour in their hearts, Rai said. tnn
