Criminal shot at in retaliatory fire by police in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: A criminal was shot at by a Coimbatore city police team in retaliatory fire on Tuesday early morning after he tried to escape. According to police, the accused, Sanjay Raja, was arrested for murdering a rival gang member last month.
During interrogation, Sanjay Raja told police that he has hidden a pistol and bullets at the Northen side of a foot hill near Murugan Temple at Karattumedu near Saravanampatti.
A police team comprising - inspector Krishnaleela, sub- inspectors Sundaramurthy and Chandrasekar, special sub-inspector Anandakumar and grade-I police constable Sridhar- was sent to the location at around 6.30am.
According to police, Raja took out the pistol hidden there at the spot and opened fire at the cops. Sanjay Raja suffered a bullet injury in his left knee in the retaliatory fire by police.
Sanjay has been admitted at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The city police seized a pistol and a live round from Sanjay Raja, a residence of Sivanandapuram near Saravanampatti.
The police was given five-day custody of Sanjay Raja after he surrendered before the Egmore court last week.
On February 12, 2023, Sanjay Raja and his four aides chased a rival gang member, Sathyapandi, in full public view and hacked him to death. Sanjay Raja had also opened four rounds at Sathyapandi and managed to escape.
His four associates had surrendered before a court later.
