AIZAWL: A havildar of the second battalion of Mizoram Armed Police (MAP) gunned down two of his colleagues in a fit of rage at the Buarchep Police outpost on Sunday.
IGP (Headquarters) and chief public relations officer of the state police John Neihlaia on Monday said Chakma shot havildars J Lalrohlua (51) and Indra Kumar Rai (53) with his AK-47 assault rifle in an inebriated state. "While Lalrohlua died on the spot, Rai succumbed to his injuries after being taken to the nearby Vairengte Community Health Centre at 7.20 pm," Neihlaia said.
Police seized the AK-47 rifle used in the crime, a magazine and cartridges. The incident happened at the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) barrack, around 400 metres from the main camp, he added.
Chakma, who was booked for murder, was produced before the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Kolasib on Monday which sent him to judicial custody. Chakma told his interrogators that he shot the two police personnel in a fit of rage as they had complained to the commander about his drinking habits while on duty.
Chakma has been dismissed from service and would not be entitled to receive pension and other benefits for the heinous crime he committed, the IGP said, adding that such an incident happened for the first time in the history of Mizoram Police.
Neihlaia said the state government would pay ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh each to the kin of both the victims and their family members would also be appointed in the state police department on compassionate grounds.
The bodies of the two victims would be brought to their native villages in south Mizoram by helicopter.
Meanwhile, the Central Young Chakma Association, Central Mizoram Chakma Students Union and Central Chakma Mahila Samiti have demanded severe punishment for Chakma.
