JALANDHAR: Congress MP late Santokh Singh Chaudhary’s wife Karamjit Kaur and his MLA son Vikramjit Singh Chaudhray have started campaigning for the impending Jalandhar parliamentary byelection by holding meetings in villages.
The family started the campaign from Phillaur assembly segment, which is represented by Vikramjit in the state assembly. Santokh had also remained Phillaur MLA twice. They are seeking a ticket for Karamjit, who served as principal of Government Sports College, Jalandhar, and also as deputy DPI (colleges).
Even as Congress is yet to announce its candidate, the family started campaigning on February 28, just after Vikramjit returned from the party’s Raipur session, dropping a hint that he might have got some indication from the party high command.
Vikramjit said they had covered over 30 villages in five days till March 4 and the people’s response had been good as his father had a great connection with the people. On Sunday, they attended a function at Dera Sachkhand Ballan, which is in Adampur assembly seat.
During his stint as MP for over eight and half years, Santokh had focused more on Phillaur to nurture the assembly segment as he or his family members had been contesting the seat since 1992. Though other parties have also started campaigning, no prospective candidate has started the campaign so far.
Sources in the Congress party said former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi is also keen on contesting from the seat. He has already made a couple of rounds of the parliamentary seat, but has confined himself to select meetings. The former CM also visited Dera Ballan earlier and on Sunday attended a function at the dera of Sant Inder Dass in Shekhan village in Kartarpur assembly segment.
