MUMBAI: A 27-year-old woman looking for a groom on a matrimonial site was duped by a man who claimed to be from the UK and chatted with her on social media. He told her one day that he had arrived in India to meet her but was caught up at the Foreign Registration Office and asked her to transfer money.
The Matunga police registered an FIR against one Sudhir Tripathi for cheating. The woman had registered herself on the matrimonial site in September 2022.In November, she got a proposal from Tripathi who told her that he was based in the US, but works in the UK. "She she got a message from Tripathi who said was caught up in Delhi and had to pay some penalties. On his request, she initially transferred Rs 38,500 to a certain account but Tripathi said he had to pay Rs 1.37 lakhas custom duty as he was carrying foreign currency," an officer said.A few hours later she got another call for more money and by then she realised she had been duped and then she tried to check his profile which was found to be deleted. She then registered an offence at Matunga police station.
