Fire service issues tips for devotees

Thiruvananthapuram: The fire and rescue department has issued precautionary instructions for devotees and business establishments to ensure a safe and hazard-free festival. During pongala, petrol pumps and gas godowns in the areas are advised to remain closed. As there will be pongala fireplaces near the commercial establishments, flammable materials, including fuels, logs, gas cylinders, charcoal grills and popcorn machines, are to be moved to a safe distance.
It is recommended that fuel be kept away while repair works are completed in the areas where the generator system is placed. The sale of hydrogen balloons near the fireplaces should also be strictly avoided.
Devotees are advised to wear cotton clothes. Avoid loose clothing and synthetic fibre outfits that can catch fire easily. In case the fire spreads to your clothes, rolling on the ground and covering oneself with a thick material can help extinguish the fire. Cold water should be poured on burnt areas and an ambulance should be called immediately. Sanitisers, body spray, firewood and bags are to be kept away from the fireplace.TNN
