Homeless ex-con arrested for fatal broad-daylight drug-related shooting in East Harlem
A homeless ex-con has been arrested for a fatal broad-daylight drug-related shooting in East Harlem, police said Monday.
Walter Shannon, 63, was nabbed Sunday and charged with murder, manslaughter and gun possession for the Feb. 23 slaying of 57-year-old Eddie Council.
The fatal confrontation sparked off about 2:55 p.m. at E. 125th St. and Lexington Ave.
“He was shot in the chest, lying over there by the elevator,” witness Winston Kingston said at the time, referring to an entrance to the subway stop at the intersection.
Council, struck in the chest, was rushed by medics to Harlem Hospital but could not be saved.
”We have no idea what happened,” Council’s ex-wife told the Daily News after his killing. ”He was a good person and devoted father, family man. He was around for his son.”
Police said the men had argued over selling drugs at the intersection. Council lived nearby where he was killed.
Shannon was paroled in 1989 after doing prison time for a Manhattan weapons conviction. His more recent arrests include for selling drugs and, in 2016, punching out an elderly man in Harlem, police said.
