Elderly man dies after being ‘hit by sharp object’
Ludhiana: An elderly person died under mysterious circumstances after “being hit by a sharp object” at his tea vend near the service lane on the National Highway in Khanna area late on Friday evening. The deceased has been identified as 68-year-old Girja Prasad of Focal Point, Khanna.
His son Sunil said that his father used to work in a sheller while his mother Anita Devi ran a tea stall. On Friday evening, he said that his father was sitting in the tea stall with his mother, when she cried out saying that his father had been shot and was injured. She also claimed to have heard a gunshot.
Sunil said that his father was rushed to the government hospital, where he was declared brought dead. After receiving information, police reached the spot and started investigation. Meanwhile, postmortem examination of the deceased was conducted by doctors at Khanna Government Hospital.
DSP, Khanna Karnail Singh said that investigation so far did not indicate that the deceased was fired upon or was murdered. He said that a stone which came under the wheel of some vehicle may have been thrown in his direction, hitting him fatally.
The DSP also said that the postmortem had not revealed the cause of death. He added that a sample had been sent to Mohali for chemical examination to ascertain the cause of death. Police said that inquest proceedings had been initiated.
