371 get jail term for driving under influence of alcohol in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The III and IV metropolitan magistrate courts have sent 371 persons to jail for driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to Hyderabad traffic police, 2,965 persons were caught driving under the influence of alcohol in February. Police said that they had filed 4,360 charge sheets against drunk drivers and other traffic violators last month and were produced before the court.
Apart from the 371 persons, who were awarded jail time, the remaining 3,989 were slapped with fines to the tune of 94.3 lakh.
Of the 371 persons sentenced to jail, 99 persons received four-day jail time, 89 got five-day term, 68 six days and 38 got three days.
Other traffic violators who were chargesheeted include 495 driving without licence, 111 minor drivers, 15 defective number plates and eight unauthorized persons.
"Drunken driving is one of the major reasons for fatal accidents. Hence deterrent penalty is provided in the law for drunken driving,"Hyderabad traffic police said.
