Punjab Police Succeeds Nabbing 1 Person Linked To Sikkim Female Tourist Death

Amritsar, 5 March : The police have apprehended a young man named Shamsher Singh, also known as Shera, from Naraingarh in Chheharta, in connection with the theft and subsequent death of a female tourist from Sikkim. The incident occurred about a month ago when the victim, Ganga Maya, was traveling in an auto-rickshaw with a friend after watching the Beating Retreat Ceremony at the Attari-Wagah joint check-post. Two motorcyclists snatched her handbag, causing her to fall out of the vehicle and suffer a severe head injury. She later passed away due to her injuries.

According to Parvesh Chopra, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Amritsar Rural Police, Shamsher Singh was operating the motorcycle during the incident while his accomplice Vishal, also known as Shala, was riding as a passenger. Vishal snatched the victim’s purse while she was traveling in the auto-rickshaw. The police are conducting raids to apprehend Vishal, who is still at large. The police have recovered the victim’s mobile phone and purse, which were discarded near a canal.

A case has been registered under Sections 304 (culpable homicide) and 379-B (2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in connection with the incident. Shera has confessed to two crimes, including theft, and is currently undergoing interrogation while in police custody.

The recent incident had a negative impact on the reputation of the Punjab Police, especially since the holy city witnesses a significant number of tourists. The incidence of snatching has increased significantly, with many tourists falling victim to criminals who rob them of their valuables and mobile phones. Unfortunately, most victims, especially tourists, are hesitant to file complaints with the police due to the fear of harassment.

In response to the incident, Chopra stated that two permanent checkpoints have been established, and three patrolling teams have been deployed to monitor the area, as it is a popular destination for tourists visiting the Attari-Wagah joint check-post.
