SURAT: Police arrested an Ahmedabad resident for allegedly cheating a woman professor living in Parle Point area of Rs 14 lakh promising her a Canadian visa. The accused developed contact with the woman when she had approached a matrimonial site seeking an NRI bride for her younger brother.
Following the cheating complaint, the police arrested accused Prakash Patil while the website sacked the accused following the police complaint, the police said.
The victim told the police that she paid Rs 11.23 lakh through a mobile phone wallet and another Rs 5.23 lakh through angadia. The cheating continued from March 2021. However, when the accused failed to provide her a visa, she demanded her money back. The accused returned Rs 2.38 lakh, but when he failed to repay the remaining Rs 14 lakh, she approached the police.
According to the case details, the woman went to the website to post details of her younger brother whom she was trying to match with an NRI girl. During the process, Patil came in contact with the woman over phone and he informed her that he can help her get a visa as well.
Trusting Patil, the woman asked him to get her son a permanent residency in Canada. She paid money as demanded by the accused. “The accused was offering consultancy for visa on the sly, while working with the matrimonial site without his employer’s knowledge. He duped the victim and did not return money as well,” said a police officer.
