GURGAON: Chief secretary Sanjeev Kaushal has warned of strict action against
MCG officials and private agencies if they fail to adhere to the timelines set for legacy waste processing at Bandhwari.
In a meeting with senior MCG officials on Friday evening, the chief secretary also asked them to expedite decentralised fresh waste processing apart from meeting the deadlines fixed by an National Green Tribunal (NGT)-appointed committee for legacy waste processing at Bandhwari.
"The chief secretary said in the meeting that officials from the corporation must take the targets very seriously and if there is any lapse, they must be ready to face action," said an NGT committee member, who was also present in the meeting.
While March 31 is the deadline for ending fresh waste dumping at Bandhwari, September 2023 is the cut-off date for completing legacy waste processing there.
"The MCG officials were also told to explore all options to step up the decentralised processing of waste. Otherwise, it will be difficult to reduce the quantity of legacy waste already dumped at Bandhwari. The inflow has to be reduced," said the NGT committee member.
"The second aspect discussed in the meeting was that the processing of legacy waste itself also needs to be stepped up. The third aspect was about the waste-to-energy plant for which strict timelines were given and the officials were told to ensure that the commitments are strictly honoured," he further added.
On leachate management, MCG commissioner PC Meena said in the meeting that "the situation is broadly under control but there are some pockets which need to be plugged".
"The officials were clearly told that the new disk tube and reverse osmosis (DTROs) should be installed as per the timelines. MCG will make two DTROs to treat the leachate at Bandhwari operational by March 31. Each will have a capacity of 200 kilolitres per day (KLD) and will be installed at sewage treatment plants," he also added.
