Born in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, Syed Amir Haider Kamal Naqvi, famously known as Kamal Amrohi, was an Indian film director and screenwriter. Kamal Amrohi was a first cousin to Pakistani writers Jaun Elia and Rais Amrohvi. Kamal Amrohi left Amroha to study in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1938, where singer K. L. Saigal discovered him and took him to Mumbai. He debuted as a director in 'Mahal' (1949), starring Madhubala and Ashok Kumar, which was a musical hit with songs by Lata Mangeshkar and Rajkumari Dubey. Kamal Amrohi's directorial 'Pakeezah' (1972) has been called one of the most extraordinary musical melodramas ever made in India. He was one of the four dialogue writers of the famous 1960 movie, 'Mughal-e-Azam,' for which he won the Filmfare Award. Amrohi's first wife was Bilkis Bano. After her death, he married Sayeda Al-Zehra Mehmood. Amrohi's third wife was Meera Kumari, and post her untimely death, he married his physician. He passed away on February 11, 1993, in Mumbai.
