Port Huron Northern's Tyler Jamison named a finalist for Mr. Basketball Award

Residents of the Blue Water Area have long known about Tyler Jamison's greatness. Now the rest of Michigan does too.
The Port Huron Northern star was named a finalist for the 2023 Hal Schram Mr. Basketball Award on Friday, which recognizes the top boys basketball player in the state.
"It feels great," Jamison told the Times Herald. "It's a great honor being considered one of the top five by a lot of the coaches in the state. I'm definitely not taking it for granted. There are a lot of great players who feel like they deserve to be on this list who aren't on it. So I'm really proud of myself and my accomplishments. I'm very happy that I made it into consideration."
The other finalists are Kaden Brown (Grand Rapids Catholic Central), Ryan Hurst (North Farmington), Curtis Williams (Birmingham Brother Rice) and Sonny Wilson (U-D Jesuit).
Jamison first learned of his selection on Feb. 26 and had to keep the news to himself until Friday's announcement. Since the five finalists were revealed, Jamison has received an abundance of kudos.
"The support has been tremendous," Jamison said. "Not only from people within the area, but from people all over the state who I've gotten to know over the years playing basketball.
"It's really a small world out there when you think about it. I know each of the finalists. I've played with them or against them since I was very young. So it's just cool seeing how far we've all come."
Jamison is currently averaging 26.4 points, 11.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.2 steals per game. Northern is 19-3 and won the MAC White championship earlier this season.
The winner of the 2023 Mr. Basketball award will be announced by the Detroit Free Press on March 20. Voting takes place March 9-13 and is only open to members of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.
"I think there's a ton of people out there who are pulling for me," Jamison said. "And I really appreciate each and every one of them."
