AHMEDABAD: A 47-year-old woman suffering from multiple ailments committed suicide on Friday afternoon by jumping off the CTM double-decker flyover.
Nine people have jumped from this flyover in a year, making it a suicide hotspot. This year alone, four people jumped off the bridge between January and March; one succumbed to injuries.
Sheetal Sonar, a resident of Gujarat Housing Board society in Bapunagar, went to the CTM flyover and stood there for a while before leaping off. Onlookers called up the 108 ambulance which took her to LG Hospital in Maninagar, but she died during treatment, said cops.
An official of Ramol police said that Sonar left her house around 12.30pm on Friday after telling her sister that she was going out to buy clothes.
As she did not return after nearly one hour, her sister called her. Sheetal told her that she was at the CTM flyover. Since her sister had read in the newspapers about suicide attempts from the flyover, she sent her son to CTM. He meanwhile called up Sheetal and the call was received by a staffer of 108 ambulance service.
The latter informed him that Sheetal had attempted suicide, the official said. According to police, Sheetal was undergoing treatment for 10 illnesses including neurological problems and hypertension.
"In 2018, she was diagnosed with brain tumour and her physical and mental health deteriorated after the surgery. She had been suffering from mental health issues and harboured suicidal thoughts," the official said.
