KOLKATA: A row has erupted between two groups of residents at a complex in Rajarhat over feeding of stray dogs on the premises. While a section of residents has lodged a police complaint claiming a family of strays living in the complex has been driven out, another section alleged the dog lovers were bringing in strays from outside, and feeding and settling them on the premises, causing trouble to residents.
An officer, who had to send a team to calm residents down, said they have made arrangements for regular patrolling around the complex to ensure trouble doesn't escalate. Cops have also instructed both sets of residents to maintain peace.
"We sent a team of officers to the complex and have held dialogues with the animal lovers, as well as those who are against feeding dogs in the complex. We have said we cannot relocate the dogs present in the complex as it is against law, but have also instructed the complex's security guards to prevent entry of more strays," said an officer.
According to the complaint lodged on Monday, four dogs, including three puppies allegedly born in the complex, had gone missing. When a group of animal lovers who fed them complained, they were allegedly abused by other residents. "We were verbally attacked and threatened. The puppies were thrown out and we couldn't find them," said a complainant.
The other group of residents told cops the animal lovers had been providing beds for the strays in common areas, and the garden and pathways were littered with leftovers and faeces. "The dog lovers should keep the strays in their homes and feed them there. ," said a residents.
When TOI contacted the facility manager of the complex, he said after the row on February 26, the situation has been under control.
"Dogs have been living in the complex for long, but differences have cropped up about feeding and providing shelter to them. There was a heated argument between both groups on Sunday night, but since then, the situation is under control. We are not aware of any dog going missing," said Arijit Sengupta, the facility manager.
