NEW DELHI: The Ashram flyover extension is likely to be inaugurated on March 6, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Wednesday.
The six-lane flyover is expected to bring relief to the commuters between Delhi and Noida, as it will provide a signal-free corridor from the NCR cities to the central and southern parts of the capital.
"The CM will inaugurate the flyover at 12 pm," confirmed a high-ranking Public Works Department official.
The work on the flyover started in June 2020. It was supposed to be completed within a year and scheduled to be inaugurated on February 28 by Kejriwal and deputy CM Manish Sisodia but got delayed due to several reasons.
Earlier on two occasions, Manish Sisodia had inspected the construction work when he was in charge of the PWD department.
PWD had closed the high-traffic flyover for around 45 days from January 2 to integrate the old and the existing flyover.
The Ashram flyover is one of the busiest sections in the city as the Mathura Road and DND flyway connect to it. The length of the newly constructed extension is 1.4 km. Due to the corridor improvement plan, the Ashram Chowk sees heavy traffic even during non-peak hours. This spills over onto the Outer Ring Road from Kalindi Kunj to the IIT flyover side, Barapullah Flyover, Sarai Kale Khan.
The flyover extension is aimed at decongesting the three major intersections on this part of the Ring Road- Maharani Bagh Intersection, Ring Road DND road junction, and Ring road loop towards Sarai Kale Khan. The proposal was passed by the UTTIPEC in 2017 after its completion the elevated corridor having three ramps will provide a signal-free route from South Delhi to Noida and further NCR towns. There is a high flow of traffic movement from Lajpat Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan-Noida in the evening while in the morning the flow is heavy from Noida to Lajpat Nagar.
