Elections 2023: The counting of votes began at 8am.
The ruling BJP-IPFT alliance is leading in 34 seats in Tripura while the Left-Congress alliance is ahead in 14 seats, just two seats ahead of Pradyot Manikya Debbarma's Tipra Motha. The BJP has also attained a comfortable lead in Nagaland where it is part of an alliance with NDPP. The alliance is ahead in 39 seats. In Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma's NPP is ahead in 26 seats while the BJP is ahead in 7 seats, as per trends. The voting on 178 seats across the three states was held on February 16 and 27 marking the first round of polls in an electorally-crucial year.
While there are 60 seats in Nagaland, polls were held in 59 seats as one constituency (Akuluto) has been won uncontested by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In Meghalaya too, the total number come down from 60 to 59 as election on one seat has been countermanded.
Stakes are high for the BJP in Tripura, a Left stronghold captured by the party in 2018. The results of the polls in Meghalaya and Nagaland will also answer whether it has made further inroads in the two states or the opposition has managed to dent its influence.
Here are the LIVE UPDATES of the results of assembly elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland:
After trailing in the earlier rounds of counting for the Nagaland Assembly, the BJP's Nagaland chief Temjen Imna Along took a lead in his constituency, Alongtaki, one of the significant seats in the state assembly. Known for his witty social media posts, the minister posted a 'filmy' update for his followers on Twitter. "Haar kar jitney wale ko ................. Kehte hai," Mr Along tweeted actor Shah Rukh Khan's famous dialogue from the Hindi film "Baazigar". He also shared a picture of himself with the tweet. (Read full story here)
- We were expecting more seats and will do a post-election analysis as to why it didn't happen. I'm going to collect the (winning) certificate. The date for the swearing-in ceremony will be decided after consultation with the central leadership.

Nagaland got its first-ever woman MLA today, after 60 years since it attained statehood. Hekani Jakhalu, from BJP's ally NDPP, has won from Dimapur-III seat. The 48-year-old lawyer-activist was among four women of the total 183 candidates who contested the Nagaland assembly elections.
Congress's Ravindra Dhangekar won the by-elections in Maharashtra's Kasba Peth today, beating BJP candidate Hemant Rasane by over 12,000 votes. Counting is also underway for another seat in Maharashtra's Pune district. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee vice president and former MLC Mohan Joshi claimed victory for Dhangekar as Congress and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) workers broke into a celebration outside the counting centre.
