Russian flees from detention centre at Mapusa
Panaji: A Russian national Dmitri Aleksandra (40) escaped from the detention centre at Mapusa on Wednesday evening by breaking a door lock. He was lodged there since February 9 for overstaying.
Mapusa PI Paresh Naik said that after the complaint was lodged, they launched a search operation to trace the Russian. An offence has been registered under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, he said.
Foreigners who are found without travel documents are kept at the detention centre by the Foreigners Regional Registration Officers (FRRO). The offenders remain there until arrangements to send them back to their home country are done. Sometimes it may take a year or more till they are deported.
“Since it is only a detention centre, it is not manned by many personnel,” a source said.
