The 2023 Ford Escape brings frugal hybrid tech and zippy handling to the masses, though it’s a lot pricier than before.
What kind of car is the 2023 Ford Escape? What does it compare to?
The 2023 Escape is five-seat compact crossover SUV that battles bestsellers such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Hyundai Tucson.
Is the 2023 Ford Escape a good SUV?
It’s a strong choice, easily earning a TCC Rating of 6.3 out of 10 thanks to top safety scores, good road manners, and updated styling. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2023 Ford Escape?
A visual update this year brings handsome new styling, trim levels regrouped under base, Active, Platinum, and PHEV, and ST-Line branding, and a zippier infotainment system with over-the-air updates.
The Escape’s new mug trades last year’s low, smiling grille for a more angular design that integrates better with revised headlights. The cabin is stylish, but not especially fancy unless you spring for costly extras.
Four engine choices range from just 181 hp from a bite-size turbo-3 through a 200-hp hybrid, a plug-in hybrid with nearly 40 miles of range, and a 250-hp turbo-4 at the top of the range.
Hybrids are arguably the smartest of the bunch, with terrific fuel economy and decent off-the-line go. All models have Euro-style road manners, with crisp steering and a supple ride. While not overly sporty, the Escape can entertain on a winding road.

Styling
The 2023 Ford Escape’s fresh styling gives it a sportier look in line with its handling.
Is the Ford Escape a good-looking car?
It’s sleek and almost sporty, especially thanks to a new, wider, and busier grille treatment up front. We’re more enamored with the Escape’s exterior than its interior, so it scores a 7 on the TCC scale.
In contrast to the Bronco Sport—or even the RAV4—the Escape has a car-like look that eschews any hint of ruggedness. New ST-Line trim this year brings upsized wheels and additional lower cladding, but it’ll take side-by-side comparisons to really note the differences.

Performance
Ford makes every version of its Escape fun and comfortable.
All four versions of the 2023 Ford Escape meet our demands. They’re polished, earning a point above average for a supple ride. They score a 6; plug-in hybrids might be worth another point, too.
Is the Ford Escape AWD?
Ford offers all-wheel drive on all but the plug-in hybrid version, which is a shame since its emissions-free commuting potential would be just as nice in snow.
2023 Ford Escape
Comfort & Quality
The 2023 Ford Escape has a well-utilized cabin.
Ford makes great use of the space allotted to the 2023 Escape, though the front seats could be better. It’s a 7 thanks to decent rear-seat room and a big cargo area.
The Escape’s front seats are short and have narrow bolsters, which can make them a tricky fit for taller and wider passengers. Ford fits cloth to base versions, while leather works its way in as you spend your way up the lineup.
2023 Ford Escape
Safety
The 2023 Ford Escape boasts plenty of crash-avoidance tech.
How safe is the Ford Escape?
The 2023 Ford Escape has a mostly good crash-test record, and all versions have plenty of standard technology. It’s a 7 on the TCC scale thanks to a five-star NHTSA rating and standard automatic emergency braking as well as blind-spot monitors. Optional extras depending on the trim include adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist, a surround-view camera system, and a head-up display.
The NHTSA grants the Escape a five-star overall rating. A new side-impact test standard this year means that the 2023 Escape lacks the Top Safety Pick score its predecessors received. It’s rated “Marginal” in the latest, more stringent test, but it does well otherwise.
2023 Ford Escape
Features
Even with a price hike this year, the 2023 Ford Escape is a good value.
Ford packs a lot of tech into its compact crossover SUV, including an upsized 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, cloth seats, and 17-inch alloy wheels for a little shy of $30,000.
It’s a 8 for features based on standard fare, a big touchscreen, and a good range of optional features. The 3-year/36,000-mile warranty is typical for a mainstream model.
2023 Ford Escape
Fuel Economy
The 2023 Ford Escape is a fuel sipper in hybrid guise.
Is the Ford Escape good on gas?
It’s decent in gas-only form but quite thrifty as a hybrid.
Base models with front-wheel drive and the 1.5-liter inline-3 are pegged at 27 mpg city, 34 highway, 30 combined per the EPA test. That’s good for a 4 on the TCC scale.
