Overstaying Russian flees from Goa detention centre
Police said that the Russian citizen was lodged in the detention centre on February 9.
PANAJI: A Russian national escaped from the detention centre at Mapusa on Wednesday evening. He was lodged there for overstaying on February 9.
The accused is identified as Dmitri Aleksandra (40).
A police officer said after the complaint was lodged, they started the investigation into the incident.
An offence has been registered under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, he said.
Foreigners who are found without travel documents are placed in the detention centre by the Foreigners Regional Registration Officers (FRRO).
They remain there till the arrangement to send them back to their home country is done, and it can take a year or more.
A majority of those found overstaying are from African countries, a source said.
“Since it is the detention centre, it does not have a tight security,” the source said.
