THANE: An alert resident from Kalwa helped save a jamun tree from being destroyed by miscreants who had dumped smouldering charcoal near its trunk for two days.
Lokesh Narkhede, a resident of Parsik Nagar, spotted the trunk base of the tree near his building burnt and ash accumulated near it on Monday. He initially did not suspect anything amiss but decided to check the following day. To his horror he spotted smouldering charcoal at the trunk of the huge tree Tuesday on , which apparently had weakened the tree stability.
Lokesh immediately tweeted and alerted the civic teams that removed the charcoal blocks and put soil around the trunk to salvage the tree.
“It seems that someone was trying to destroy the huge tree bý burning its trunk. I fear the tree will not be able to survive but will pursue the matter till its logical end,” he said.
Senior inspector K Thorat at Kalwa police station said they were yet to be alerted of the incident. “The bark was burnt due to dumping of charcoal by a local eatery. We will book those responsible,” said Dinesh Gawade, Thane civic garden inspector, Kalwa.
