OPINION:
Chief Justice Roberts is right in saying that it should be Congress that provides authorization for emergency financial relief to a group of citizens, and that is precisely what Congress has done (“Supreme Court signals skepticism of Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan,” Web, Feb. 28).
If the application of the law is unfair, Congress has had time to rescind or restrict the law as the challenge to excuse college debt has worked its way through the courts. The fact that Congress has not acted should discourage the court from assuming the authority and responsibility of the legislative branch by denying relief.
