The Boston Red Sox traded reliever Matt Barnes for left-handed pitcher Richard Bleier. Barnes has spent his entire nine-year career in Boston. It was tough for Barnes as he had never imagined playing in a different uniform.
When asked about the trade, he mentioned that he had no hard feelings towards the club. They treated him well during his time there, but he may have fired a shot at Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom.
Bloom's been on the hot seat for the last couple of years. He took major heat in the offseason when Xander Bogaerts signed with the San Diego Padres. It didn't get much better when fans learned they would be without Trevor Story for much of this season.
Fans have been calling for Bloom's job for a while now. If the Red Sox have a disastrous season this year, it may be his last.
"So another Chaim hater... tell him to get in line!" one fan tweeted.
"Ouch. Nice dagger thrown by Matt toward Bloom The Clueless One," another fan tweeted.
Some fans agree with Barnes. They don't like the direction the team has gone with Chaim Bloom at the wheel.
Other fans are happy to see Matt Barnes go. They didn't think he was a big part of their organization. They also don't like him taking shots at a guy who gave him a two-year extension in 2021.
There's not much hope for the Boston Red Sox this season. For one, they play in one of the toughest divisions in baseball in the American League East. They have to compete with the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays all year.
The Yankees and Blue Jays look like serious contenders this season. You can also never count out the Rays. No matter how insignificant their lineup seems, they always come out and play hard.
It will be interesting to follow the Red Sox this season. Enrique Hernandez is expected to be the team's everyday shortstop with Story on the IL. He has some experience at the position, but not a lot.
Rafael Devers will be the one bright spot on this team fans can get excited about. He signed a 10-year, $313.5 million contract in January. He'll have to carry the team on his back if they want to make some noise this year.
