Two persons were killed and ten others were injured when the car they were travelling in fell into a gorge in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, police said on Wednesday. Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde could not have been sworn in as the chief minister of Maharashtra if the assembly speaker was not restrained from deciding the disqualification petitions pending against 39 MLAs, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said. The Shinde faction told the top court that even if 39 MLAs would have been disqualified from the assembly, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government would have fallen because it had lost majority and the then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray had resigned before the floor test. Officials of the Konkan flying squad of the Maharashtra excise department intercepted a tempo at Talasari, he said. IMFL meant for sale only in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu was being transported to Palghar district, he said. (PTI)

Mumbai Police detained local Congress leader Bhai Jagtap and a number of other party workers on Wednesday while they were protesting outside the National Stock Exchange (NSE) building against the Adani group and its Chairman Gautam Adani, an official said. Hundreds of Congress party workers, including women, gathered outside the NSE building in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and started shouting slogans against the Adani group. (PTI)

Police raided an orchestra bar in Thane and arrested seven people for allegedly flouting rules and indulging in obscene acts, an official said on Wednesday. Following a complaint and a tip-off, officials of the Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar police's anti-human trafficking cell (AHTC) raided the bar located in Kashimira area on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday. In a fresh setback to Uddhav Thackeray, Viplav Bajoria became the first member of the state legislative council from his camp to join the CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, giving him a toehold in the council.Late on Monday, the CM issued a letter asking deputy chairperson of the council Neelam Gorhe to appoint Bajoria as Shiv Sena's whip in the upper House. Shinde is the party's leader in the state assembly.

The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) has imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 each on the state chief secretary and the BMC commissioner, along with two other senior officers, for their failure to represent the facts pertaining to the renewal of Mahalaxmi Racecourse's expired lease causing loss of public money and for seeking adjournment repeatedly during hearings. MSHRC officials said loss of public money comes under right to equality prompting it to take it up.
